Paul Bridle, Leadership Methodologist, talks to Political Presentation Coach, Graham Davies, about where leaders go wrong with presentations. Although the discussion focuses on political leaders, there are many parallel lessons for business leaders, and also for job interview candidates, if you imagine that the interview is essentially a presentation about the candidate.
The video stresses the importance for presenters (and interviewees) of the following:
- Preparation – don’t just be mentally prepared, but tailor your presentation to your audience (or interviewer).
- Make yourself the key vehicle for communicating, not slides or support material (or your CV).
- Use your personality and your words to turn what is otherwise an information download into real communication at a personal level.
- Think about the end result you want from the audience – support for a cause, strategy or decision, or a job offer – and use your engagement with that audience to achieve it.
- Remain concise in your communication – don’t bury your key message under too many words or too much data.
